Valley City is the seat of Barnes County, in the east central area of North Dakota. It has a population of about 6,826 people. Coordinates are latitude 46.92 N, longitude 98.00 W. Its elevation is 1,222 feet. Valley City sits on the banks of the winding Sheyenne River. During its history, it was known under several names, including Second Crossing, Fifth Siding, Wahpeton, and Worthington. It is the home of Valley City State University .
